Simple Tools for Behaviour Change

COM-B Behaviour Change System Infographic

MICHIE ET AL (2011) IMPLEMENTATION SCIENCE

I have been searching for a good model for behaviour change and the COM-B System the best I have found yet. Michie et al have attempted to condense the complexity of behaviour change models into one comprehensive yet simple and usable model.

The model recognises that behaviour change is influenced by the three important mechanisms: a person’s capability (psychological and physical), motivation (reflective and automatic) and opportunity (physical and social environment). In order to illicit behaviour change, at least one of the three mechanisms will need to be modified. The model has been used effectively in designing intervention for long term behaviour change, particularly in health settings.

My professional interests cover three broad areas (Leadership, Education and Wellbeing) and I can see real relevance of applying the COM-B system to solve many challenges for all three and I will be writing more on this shortly.

We use Functional Imagery Training and Motivation Interviewing in our coaching and this approach ticks all of the boxes in the COM-B model (which might be why I like this model so much!) We work to build motivation for long term sustained behaviour change, and believe that you have the capacity to solve the challenges you face. We support you in building self efficacy and in harnessing the best physical and social environments for change.

What do you think of the model? Have you used it already? I would love to hear your thoughts so please leave your comments below.
