Functional Imagery Training
Functional Imagery Training is a new, evidenced based way of using imagery to support behaviour change/goal achievement by strengthening motivation, self control, confidence and self efficacy and has been developed by researchers at the University of Plymouth and Queensland University of Technology. It is based on Elaborated Intrusion Theory that explains the key role of mental imagery in desire. This approach builds on two decades of research showing that mental imagery is more strongly emotionally charged than other types of thought. Functional Imagery Training elicits and trains you in the skills of flexibility and creativity, using imagery to motivate and affect change, even in the face of adversity. The beauty of Functional Imagery Training is that you can learn and train to do this for yourself for any behaviour change goal.
Motivational Interviewing
The the verbal content of FIT is Motivational Interviewing (MI). MI is a form of collaborative conversation for strengthening a person’s or group’s own motivation and commitment to a goal or change. Through the use of structural language it helps you form your own solutions and work through any ambivalence you may have. Resistance to change is explored and undone gently. MI helps you talk yourself into changing and unlocking the untapped motivation for change that you already have.
